To Bishops, Priests and Deacons in Oregon and the United States

       I.            As Christ’s representative, council your flock to not stop those who perform miracles in His name.

Jesus taught:

Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.

Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us.

Mark 9:38 -40

II.            Remember the source of Christian unity is our belief in Jesus Christ. That unity can never be achieved by fiat or fear; it is a gift to be shared.  Unity does not flow from uniformity or absorption.

Admonished those in your congregation who uttered the words, “Why can’t they be like us.”

Pope Francis said:

  • “Christian unity is an essential requirement of our faith, a requirement that springs from the intimacy of our being as believers in Jesus Christ”
  • “Unity is not the fruit of our human efforts or the product constructed by ecclesiastical diplomacy but is instead a gift that comes from on high. We men are not able to achieve unity by ourselves, nor can we decide its forms and timing.”
  • “Our task is that of receiving this gift and making it visible to all.”
  • “Unity is not uniformity.”
  • ‘Unity is not absorption.”

III.            Remind yourselves and your parishioners our Christian Unity has always prevailed through all struggles.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said:

“In the end the awareness that the Church is and must remain united has always prevailed. Its unity has always been stronger than internal struggles and wars,”
