John Kingery: Advocate and author
“For the difference we make in truth, love, and unity through effective compassion and service”

John advocated for the successful release of detainees at Sheridan and termination of ICE contracts in Oregon (2020) as member of broad-based coalition.

In Philadelphia PA, John led the naturalization exam preparation program for Catholic Social Services. He was recognized for unparalleled level of professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.

John graduated from Villanova University’s Immigration Advocacy certificate program in 2020. He has a certificates in lay ministry from the Archdiocese of Portland/Notre Dame, and BA in Public Administration from Seattle University 1981.

Fr. Groody, CSC: Author of “A Theology of Migration” and Associate Professor of theology and global affairs at Notre Dame.

He has authored or edited eight books on poverty, justice, and migration, including Border of Death, Valley of Life: An Immigrant Journey of Heart and SpiritGlobalization, Spirituality, and Justice: Navigating the Path to Peace. and his most recent book,  A Theology of Migration: The Bodies of Refugees and the Body of Christ (with a forward by Pope Francis). He has also produced several films, including Dying to Live: A Migrant’s Journey and Return to Rwanda: A Journey of Hope.

Fr. Groody has collaborated with institutions such as thGroody has worked with US Congress, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, the World Council of Churches, the Vatican, and the United Nations on migration and justice issues.

John Herrera: Director of Immigration Legal Services Catholic Charities of Oregon.

Since 2005, he with through the efforts of dedicated staff and volunteers have protected individuals and maintained and reunified families in need. At the core of our their work is a simple but profound belief: “Every individual is a human being deserving dignity and respect.” On November 6th of this year wrote Welcoming the Stranger: Upholding our values on immigration for the Catholic Charities. He wrote,” We must remember that democracy thrives when we open our arms to those fleeing oppression.”

John J. Marandas: Attorney at Marandas Garcia Law Group LLC

John’s firm represent individuals, families, and businesses in a variety of immigration law, family law, and litigation matters. He earned his J.D. at Willamette University College of Law in 1997, and B.S. in Political Science with minor in Spanish at Santa Clara University, 1994.

John received the Gerald H. Robinson Excellence in Advocacy Award (recognizing a chapter member who has demonstrated excellence as an advocate for the rights of immigrants), AILA Oregon Chapter in 2022.

Meghan Rasmussen: Community Outreach Specialist for Washington County Sheriff’s Office

Meghan is an experienced Events Specialist and Administrative Assistant with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies and Arts and Letters as well as a minor in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She is a lifelong learner, pushing the boundaries what others have done. The reasoning behind a practice should never be “because it has always been done this way”, but rather, we should always question how we can improve and become better.

Long time advocate for the Latinx and immigrant communities in Washington County

Mr. Hector R. Hinojosa is a recipient of the 2024 The Ohtli Award, the highest recognition awarded by the Mexican Government to members of the community in the United States for his exception contribution to the development of the Mexican community living abroad.

He came to Oregon as a young migrant worker, Hector R. Hinojosa started taking on leadership roles as a teenager, serving on President Nixon’s White House Conference on Youth.

As an executive, he negotiated with union leaders, including César Chávez and the UFW. Hinojosa was a co-founder of Centro Cultural, Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, and Salud de la Familia, all long-standing culturally specific organizations that have helped countless Latinos and others.
