Fortnight for Freedom to Love

The U.S. bishops issued a document on religious liberty titled ‘Our First Most Cherished Liberty’ on April 12 (http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/our-first-most-cherished-liberty.cfm0). The document identifies examples where religious liberty is being challenge – the HHS mandate, immigration laws, foster care, human trafficking, church governance and use of public schools for worship services. They called for a ‘fortnight for freedom’ focusing on teaching and witnessing for religious liberty.

I prayed and thought about the document and its call. Religion is a binding together, but with what command? It is the command of love written in Deuteronomy 6:5 and the answer given by Jesus in Matthew 22:37 – ‘You shall love the Lord, your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind.’ Religious liberty is the freedom to love as God calls us to. I have come to realize that social justice is one response to that call and must flow from the great commandment.

How can you and your congregations celebrate a Fortnight for the Freedom to Love?  You could have a special community gathering with prayer, reading, reflecting and sharing.  Possibly prayer cards Freedom to Love Business Cards to share with your parish and community.

Pray about it and let the spirit move you.

Finally, today my morning devotion included the following intercession – “Give your spirit of wisdom and good counsel to our bishops and Church leaders.  Listen to our prayer, O God.”    This prayer is for you and your congregations also!

Peace,

John
